The Alliance of Specialty Medicine has endorsed legislation introduced in the House and Senate which would increase the number of Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency positions by 15,000 over the next 5 years in order to tackle the severe physician manpower shortage.
According to a 2015 study, the United States will face an overall shortage of between 46,000-90,000 physicians by 2025. Specialty shortages will be particulary large, including neurosurgeons, urologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists and orthpaedic surgeions.
The legislation, known as the “Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2015” was introduced as S.1148 by Senators Nelson (D-FL) and Schumer (D-NY) and H.R.2124 by Representatives Crowley (D-NY) and Boustany (R-LA).
