The Alliance of Specialty Medicine joined with 85 other medical associations and medical societies in thanking Congressional leaders for adding 1,000 new Medicare-supported graduate medical education (GME) positions as part of an Omnibus Appropriations bill at the close of the last Congress in December.
In letters to the bipartisan Congressional leadership in the House and Senate as well as the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate Finance, House Energy and Commerce and House Ways and Means Committee, the Alliance, as part of the GME Advocacy Coalition, thanked these health policy leaders for the first increase in GME slots since 1997. Now more than ever, with a national health emergency taking a physical and mental toll on the provider community, actions to line up the next generation of doctors is critical to keeping our health infrastructure prepared to respond to our nation’s future health needs.
