The Alliance of Specialty Medicine wrote to House Leadership in support of H.R. 1868, a bill to extend the moratorium on the Medicare sequester and prevent the mandatory cuts due to statutory “PAYGO” requirements stemming from the passing of the latest COVID relief bill, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Congress has previously acted to temporarily suspend the 2% Medicare sequestration cuts through March of this year. Specialists need the moratorium extended further as they continue to experience severe financial losses due to the drastic decreases in non-COVID related and non-emergency care. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently determined that the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 would trigger the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2010 (PAYGO) and cause Medicare spending reductions of an estimated 4%, or $36 billion, next year.

The Alliance also wrote a letter to Senators Shaheen (D-NH) and Murkowski (R-AK) in support of their bill, S. 748, the Medicare Sequester Relief Act. This bill would continue the suspension of the 2% Medicare sequestration cuts, which were set to expire at the end of March 2021.
