In response to the proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on the VA Pilot Program on Graduate Medical Education and Residency (PPGMER), the Alliance of Specialty Medicine submitted a comment letter applauding the Department for creating selection criteria that acknowledge the need to recognize shortages in access to specialty medicine.

This complements additional advocacy from the Alliance to expand training opportunities and address impending workforce shortages. As cited in the comment letter, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the United States will face an overall shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034, including 77,100 specialty physicians.
