The Fall 2023 edition of On Call features the Alliance’s advocacy activities as well as the great work of our individual specialty societies. We begin this edition with a breakdown of the reasons for the fourth straight year of a proposed Medicare reimbursement cut by CMS. The next story covers the Alliance’s return to Capitol Hill in the summer for its first in-person fly-in since 2019. During the fly-in, Alliance physicians not only highlighted their concerns with yet another Medicare cut but also other barriers to care, including prior authorization and step therapy. The Alliance also heard from federal policymakers, including the Executive Director of MedPAC and Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy.
Our Specialty Spotlight this month is on the American Society of Retina Specialists, who are fighting to make sure the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health System provides the best in eyecare for veterans. There is also a story highlighting the College of Neurological Surgeons’ outreach to underrepresented students who may not have considered a career in medicine. Finally, we round out this edition with the American Society of Echocardiography’s outreach to navigate the ever-changing healthcare environment by identifying changes in echo practice and advances in patient care.
