The Alliance of Specialty Medicine wrote a letter of support to Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) and Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA) in support of H.R. 2433, the Reducing Medically Unnecessary Delays in Care Act. This legislation aims to ensure that prior authorization decisions in Medicare and Medicare Advantage are made by board-certified physicians in the same specialty as the treating physician and that plans adhere to medical necessity and clinical criteria requirements.
A 2022 survey of over 800 specialty physicians revealed that prior authorization requirements have increased for procedures (93%), diagnostic tools (83%), and prescription drugs (66%), including generic medications. These requirements create barriers to timely, necessary care and impose administrative burdens on medical practices.
The Alliance appreciates the leadership of Representatives Green and Schrier and looks forward to collaborating to improve patient access to care and reduce administrative challenges. The full letter can be accessed by clicking on the link below.
